Candle Care & Safety

Lighting a candle with a match.

Simple Care. Safe Enjoyment

A well-crafted candle offers hours of beautiful fragrance and ambiance when cared for properly. Following these guidelines will help your candle perform beautifully and remain safe to enjoy.

Before You Light Your Candle

Before each use:

  • Place your candle on a stable, level, heat-resistant surface.
  • Remove all packaging, labels, and decorative materials from the top of the candle.
  • Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch (6 mm) before lighting.
  • Keep the wax free of wick trimmings, matches, dust, and other debris.
  • Never use a candle near curtains, paper, bedding, books, or other flammable materials.

The First Use Is the Most Important

The first use helps establish your candle's melt pattern.

Allow the candle to remain lit until the melted wax reaches nearly the entire edge of the container. Depending on the size of the candle, this usually takes 2–4 hours.

Extinguishing the candle too early may cause tunneling, where wax continues melting down the center instead of across the full surface.

During Each Use

For the best performance:

  • Keep your candle lit no longer than 4 hours at a time.
  • Always trim the wick before relighting.
  • Keep candles away from fans, air vents, and open windows, as drafts can cause uneven melting, excessive flickering, soot, or a larger flame.
  • Never move a candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid.
  • Keep the melt pool free of debris.

Candle Safety

For your safety:

  • Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • Keep candles away from children and pets.
  • Always keep candles within sight.
  • Use only on heat-resistant surfaces.
  • Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) between candles.
  • Do not place candles near anything that can catch fire.

Stop using your candle when approximately ½ inch (13 mm) of wax remains at the bottom of the container. Continuing beyond this level may cause the container to become excessively hot and could increase the risk of heat damage or glass breakage.

After Extinguishing

Allow the candle to cool completely before:

  • Replacing the lid.
  • Moving the container.
  • Trimming the wick.
  • Relighting the candle.

Never use water to extinguish a candle, as sudden temperature changes may damage the container and can cause hot wax to splatter.

Candle Storage

Store candles:

  • In a cool, dry place.
  • Away from direct sunlight.
  • Away from excessive heat.
  • With the lid securely in place, when applicable.

Proper storage helps preserve fragrance, color, and overall appearance.

Troubleshooting

My candle is tunneling

This usually occurs when the candle wasn't allowed to develop a full melt pool during its first few uses.

Keep the candle lit long enough for the wax to melt nearly to the edges during future uses to help maintain an even melt.

My wick has a mushroom-shaped tip

A small amount of carbon buildup is normal with many candle wicks.

Simply extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick back to approximately ¼ inch, and relight.

My candle has white patches or a frosted appearance

Soy wax is a natural material. Frosting and slight color variations are completely normal and do not affect the quality, safety, or performance of your candle. Our proprietary wax blend is designed for a smooth finish and has been extensively tested; however, because soy is a natural material, these variations may still occur.

Why does my candle look "wet" against the glass?

Natural waxes may occasionally pull away from the glass or develop small wet spots as temperatures change. This is a cosmetic characteristic and does not affect how the candle performs.

My flame seems too high

Extinguish the candle, allow it to cool, trim the wick to ¼ inch, and remove any carbon buildup before relighting.

Candle Warning

Failure to follow these instructions may result in fire, heat damage, or personal injury.

Always use candles responsibly and discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains in the container.
